CONDITIONS OF USE
Unless otherwise noted, all materials, including the name "Linguistics Challenge," images, illustrations, designs, icons, photographs, video clips, sound files, and other materials that are part of the Linguistics Challenge website are copyrights, trademarks, trade dress and/or other intellectual properties owned, controlled or licensed by the Linguistic Society of America (LSA). Individual linguistic problems are the intellectual property of the authors named on the main page of each problem.
In making these materials public via the Internet, the Linguistics Challenge intends them to be used by individuals and by teachers (in primary and secondary schools and higher education) for non-commercial educational and recreational purposes.
Material from this Web site may be copied, reproduced, framed, hyperlinked, downloaded, posted, transmitted, or distributed for the intended purposes under the following conditions:
1. The linguistic problems may not be changed in any way, without explicit permission being granted by the Linguistics Challenge committee of the LSA (firstname.lastname@example.org).
2. The name of the author and a Copyright notice (i.e. "Copyright © 2005, Linguistics Society of America") must appear on every copy of every problem used.
3. Up to 100 copies of any given problem may be reproduced without permission. If more copies are needed, please request permission from the Linguistics Challenge committee of the LSA (email@example.com). Permission will normally be granted, but your asking will help us to track usage and popularity of the program.
The following additional requests are made of users of these materials:
1. If any live competitions are organized that use the materials on this site, please notify the Linguistics Challenge committee of the LSA (firstname.lastname@example.org).
2. Teachers are asked to notify the Linguistics Challenge if these materials are used as classroom or homework assignments. Corrections and suggestions are heartily welcomed.
OWNERSHIP, LICENSE & RESTRICTIONS
Use of any robot, spider, other automatic device, or manual process to monitor or copy our Web pages or the content contained herein is strictly forbidden. Modification of the materials or use of the materials for any purpose other than stated above is a violation of copyright and other proprietary rights. For purposes of these terms, the use of any such material on any other Web site or networked computer environment is prohibited. THE LINGUISTICS CHALLENGE respects the privacy and security of its users. Our goal is to provide educators with materials to facilitate knowledge of and appreciation for the variety and beauty of the world's languages. The Linguistics Challenge is a volunteer effort and has no source of income other than institutional support provided by the University of Oregon and The Linguistics Society of America, as well as occasional gifts from interested individuals. No advertising appears on the site, and no advertising is sent from the site. The Linguistics Challenge has no reason to collect personal information from its users.
Therefore, absolutely no personal information about visitors to this site is collected or stored. As a service to users, certificates of completion may be e-mailed to teachers or other individuals chosen by users. The email addresses submitted by users are not stored by the Linguistics Challenge in any way. They are used only to send one certificate. If another certificate is to be e-mailed to the same address, the address must be submitted a second time.
In order to manage sessions and prevent intentional misuse of the site, "cookies" may be used to detect repeat visitors, and to control session and page initiation, termination and timeouts. Such cookies may record which linguistics problems have already been attempted and which have been solved by a particular user. However, no identifying information (such as an e-mail address or IP address) about the user will be collected.
